Reports are up 40% this week of robocalls claiming your Social Security number has been "suspended due to suspicious activity." They ask you to press 1 and provide your SSN to "reactivate" it.
Fake texts claiming to be from Amazon saying a large purchase was made on your account and asking you to click a link to dispute it. The link leads to a fake Amazon login page that steals your credentials.
Callers pretending to be court officials say you missed jury duty and will be arrested unless you pay a fine immediately using gift cards. Several people in Florida and Texas reported losses this week.
The Federal Trade Commission announced this week that a major Medicare phone scam operation has been shut down, with 12 individuals charged. The ring had defrauded over 3,000 seniors of an estimated $4.2 million.
Set up a family code word. If you ever get a call from someone claiming to be a family member in an emergency, ask them your secret code word. A real family member will know it — a scammer won't. Pick something simple and share it with everyone in your family this week.
